History:
The first Christian mission was established in 1830 by the Anglican Church; in 1836 'Heeverlin Saheb' constructed their first chapel here.
But it was only in 1915 that the attention of a Catholic priest was attracted towards this area. The Catholic family of Mr. Sirish Biswas had come to settle here and Fr. Wauters, SJ who had always at heart the Bengali community, started to come from Sacred Heart Church, Dharamtola, walking 11 k.m. He bought a plot of land measuring 4 Bighas, 4 Kathas and 8 chitkas (roughly 1.49 acre), on the road leading to Keorapukur. Aschool was started in one of the Catholic houses, which was later shifted to the then built mud chapel.
The mother church of Dharamtola gave to Thakurpukur church its name “Sacred Heart Church”and faithfully went on giving Rs. 500.00 per year till 1970 for its maintenance. From 1925 - 1945 Rev. Fr. Ameye S.J. was in charge, coming from St. Thomas Church, to visit his flock. In 1926 Khariberia church was opened and in 1940 Rospunji church. In 1930 a community at Rajarampur was established and in 1937 a chapel built there. In 1943 the Parish Priest of Raghabpur asked that this area be included in his Parish. In 1946 Amgachia accepted Catholic faith. In 1950 bricks replaced mud walls of the chapel.
In 1954 Fr. Koster, SJ, the Parish Priest of Raghabpur thought that Thakurpukur could be better served from Kolkata, as communications were much better
from Kolkata. Fr. Pilette, SJ from St. Xavier's College accepted the job. Fr. Pilette, SJ organized the people, started first unit of Social Service Society, known as Mutual Help Society. St. Vincent de Paul Society, Dispensary and Sunday School were also started. By the initiative of the lay people a school was started. It is this 'St. Vincent's School' which was later handed over to Loreto Sisters on their arrival in 1973. In 1971, through the generosity of the Archbishop Albert V. D'Souza, the present multi-purpose hall was built with the provision of an additional room for the visiting priest.
In June 1971 the Parish was canonically erected with Fr. Watteyne, SJ as the first Parish Priest. In 1986 Budge Budge and Bata Nagar, two Industrial towns, managed independently up to then, were attached to the Parish and in 1987 Diamond Harbour, Noorpur and Gangarampur were added to the Parish. Later in 2000 Gangarampur and in 2002 Diamond Harbour were erected parishes and at present the parish consists of 4 sub-stations.
Thakurpukur has now a church built in 1996 and the presbytery on the existing roof of the Multi purpose hall was constructed in 1998. The Amgachia church was blessed on November 17, 2011. The Regional “Probhu Jishu Maha Utsav” was celebrated on March 28, 2012. The new grotto in front of the church was inaugurated on September 08, 2013. The church has been renovated in 2015 and Stations of the Cross in the open air have been installed in its campus in 2019.
